In pursuing our own current needs, is our lifestyle compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs? Can the U.S. economy grow while concurrently supporting a healthy environment? What can nature teach us about sustainable living? Have we confused "quality of life" with "standard of living"? These are just a few of the questions we will address in this course. Through selected readings, discussions, field trips, and films we will explore the concept of "sustainability" as both a goal and a process. We will identify and analyze the potentials and constraints for achieving sustainability from ecological, political, economic, and social perspectives.
