WASHINGTON, PA (August 7, 2012)—Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) has been awarded an Empowerment Grant from the Motorola Mobility Foundation to develop mobile applications for data collection on smartphones and tablet computers.
These funds will enable professors in Archaeology, Biology, and Computing and Information Studies, among others, to work with students to build cutting-edge mobile applications (apps). The apps will then be used to collect and analyze data from various projects locally and around the world. The grant recognizes the sophisticated work being done by technology students at W&J, and will provide an additional way for students to continue to assist local non-profit groups that make use of their services.
“We are excited and honored to win an Empowerment Grant from the Motorola Mobility Foundation,” said Dr. Samuel Fee, professor of Computing and Information Studies. “These funds will enable our organization to further engage the students of W&J with technology in an effort to enhance their learning.”
Empowerment Grants support U.S.-based nonprofit organizations in the development of mobile applications to enrich the communities they serve. This year, 42 non-profits received Empowerment Grants to engage in a wide variety of outreach activities, ranging from technology-literacy education and app boot camps to collecting data for research projects to peer mentoring for students through the use of technology.
“The Empowerment Grants program allows organizations to infuse technology into their communities,” said Eileen Sweeney, director of the Motorola Mobility Foundation. “On behalf of Motorola Mobility, I’d like to sincerely congratulate this year’s exceptional and inspiring group of grantees.”
