This powerful, entertaining, surprising, one-of-a-kind performance is a series of scenes taken from everyday life and set to beautiful classical music. The American Shakespeare Center presents “The Duchess of Malfi”

Monday, October 22nd, 2012, 7:30 pm

www.americanshakespearecenter.com

Since 1988, the American Shakespeare Center has produced English Renaissance plays in a bold, fresh style, bringing Shakespeare and other early modern works to communities across the country and around the world. Direct from the stage of the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, VA, the ASC On Tour employs Shakespeare’s own staging conditions to break down the barriers that traditionally separate performer and audience. The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster was written in 1612-13 and is based on a true story. The play begins as a love story, with a Duchess who marries beneath her class, and ends as a nightmarish tragedy as her two brothers exact their revenge, destroying themselves in the process.

Workshops in stage combat on 10/22/12 in the theatre at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm. Workshops are free and open to the public.

Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas

Sunday, December 9th, 2012, 3:00 pm

www.acelticchristmas.com

We are doing something new and different this year: a Christmas show on a Sunday afternoon! Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas recreates the joy and innocence of a night before Christmas in a farmhouse in the remote parish of Teampall an Ghleanntain in the west of Ireland, when the neighbors gather around the fire to grace the long wintry night with the laughter of their stories, the joy of their music, and dances they always said they were much too old for.
This year, Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas features Marcus Donnelly from Co. Galway, one of the most exhilarating, truly creative Irish dancers performing today. Internationally acclaimed master of the steel-string guitar William Coulter joins in, along with vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Marianne Knight from Co. Mayo (and world-champion level Irish dancer), and Brian Bigley on uilleann pipes, whistles and flute (also a world-champion level Irish dancer).

Tomáseen Foley appears by arrangement with MCM Arts and Entertainment.

Music from the turn of the 20th century, Rogers and Hammerstein, Phantom of the Opera, Brigadoon, The Merry Widow and selections from Operettas including Firefly, Desert Song and Maytime are presented by Stefano and Nina Tanchietti, with accompanist Maria de los Angeles Rivera. Because of their tremendous versatility and their love for various types of musical expression, this remarkable couple decided to create a special show that would highlight their numerous gifts. They also wanted to reach out to audiences that are not accustomed to experiencing the thrill of live voices coming directly at them without the aid of microphones and amplifiers.
