Welcome to Washington & Jefferson College
As the eleventh oldest college in the U.S., W&J has a long tradition of excellence, producing thousands of successful lawyers, award-winning doctors and medical researchers, entrepreneurial business leaders, international diplomats, dedicated teachers, loving parents, and all-around great citizens. We hope that you will join this remarkable community.
W&J is a residential liberal arts college, which means that you will have classes with fewer than 20 students (and many times fewer than 10). It means that the faculty will know you as more than just a chemistry student or an English major; they will know you as a whole person and work with you to meet your goals, whatever they may be. They will invite you to do research with them, watch you play sports, help you plan an internship or study abroad, guide your career or graduate school search, attend an exhibit of your paintings.
Liberal arts colleges provide the kind of education you will need to succeed in life—no matter what students working together career you choose. Statistics indicate that most of you who enter college at this time will change careers seven times! You could start out as a lawyer, become a teacher, then a politician, then a journalist. To prepare for this kind of life, you need basic writing, speaking, and problem-solving skills that will allow you to learn for a lifetime. You will need a liberal arts education—an education that liberates you to fulfill your dreams.
At W&J you will find scholar-athletes who graduate to the best professional and graduate schools in the country. You will find students interning in hospitals, international businesses, and law offices. You will meet students who have traveled to Siberia, England, China, and Ecuador. You will find biologists, philosophers, historians, writers, photographers, political campaign leaders, student teachers...so, join us. We welcome you to the W&J family.
