Edward Martin Greb is a professor in the Department of Sociology. He arrived at Washington & Jefferson College in 1975 and his academic credentials include degrees in Psychology, Sociology and Higher Education. In addition, he completed a post-masters program in Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh and courses in Japanese language and Japanese sociology from Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. A sabbatical was spent in Japan, primarily in Miyazaki and Nobioka, Kyushu.
Dr. Greb has been active in a number of professional organizations. He served as president of the Allegheny Valley Sociological Association in 1980 and president of the Pennsylvania Sociological association in 1982. Currently, he is a member of the Japan-American Socety of Pennsylvania. In 1994, he received the Distinguished Professor Award at Washington & Jefferson College. In 1995, he was included for a second time in the Directory of Japanese Specialists published by the Japan Foundation. In 2000, he was listed as a specialist in Sociological Studies of Japan published by the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He is included in the 2005 listing.
Dr. Greb has sponsored a series of internships for W&J students at Carnegie Museum Annex in Pittsburgh; provided student excavators during the excavation of the Meadowcroft Rockshelter in Avella, PA; and facilitated student study in Japan via summer programs at Sophia University and via a series of Intersession journeys to Japan. He has recommended four successful applicants to the Japan Exchange Teaching (JET) program. Dr. Greb is currently involved in discussions on student exchange with three Japanese educational institutions (International Christian University, Sophia University and Miyazaki International University) and an International Educational Association in Samukawa, Japan.
Courses taught at W&J include Introduction to Anthropology, Introduction to Archaeology, World Societies, Sociology of Education, Japanese Society, Japanese Business and Industry, Urban Society, and Sociology of the Health Professions.
Dr. Greb currently resides in South Strabane Township with his wife, Barbara. He is a bird, deer and turkey watcher who enjoys gardening, reading and hearing from W&J graduates.
