Educational Background
Dr. Colleen H. Hyden, associate professor of sociology at Washington & Jefferson College, joined the college in 1987. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Hiram College (1982) and both her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Akron (1986, 1990).
Courses
Among other sociology courses Dr. Hyden has offered courses dealing with the role of animals in human social life, and the role of firearms in American society. She regularly teaches Introductory Sociology, Family, Social Problems, Research Methods, and Sex Roles.
Interests
Dr. Hyden has served on the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association; Board of Directors of the Washington Women’s Shelter; as a firearms instructor at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon’s Sportsmen’s Club; works with Akita Rescue; and has worked on several committees for the United Way. She has received recognition from the United Way and the YWCA for her contributions to the local community. In her time away from the classroom, she enjoys spending time with her Akitas, reading, weight lifting, and the shooting sports.
