Baroffio, Wiegand Pick Up PAC Weekly Honors
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College sophomore wide receiver Alex Baroffio (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) earned the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week award, while classmate Dion Wiegand (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) was awarded PAC Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
In addition, Baroffio was named one of six Beyond Sports Network Division III National Offensive Players of the Week.
Baroffio reeled in 10 passes for a career-high 207 yards and three touchdowns in the Presidents 24-21 victory against Waynesburg. He reached the 1,000-yard receiving mark on Saturday, becoming the first to accomplish the feat since Craig Besong in 2008.
Baroffio had a breakout season, as he led the PAC in receptions per game (7.0) and receiving yards per game (110.2), the highest average for a President since Todd Fry averaged 135.9 yards per game in 2001. In all, he caught 70 passes for 1,102 yards and 10 scores.
Wiegand blocked a Yellow Jackets’ punt late in the fourth quarter, helping set up sophomore Eric Eberle’s (Mifflintown, Pa./Juniata) game-winning 34-yard field goal as time expired. Wiegand also returned four kickoffs for 67 yards and one punt for 26 yards.
A first-year transfer from NCAA Division I Robert Morris, Wiegand ran for 132 yards and recorded two rushing scores as a running back. He led the team with a 19.8-yard kick return average, returning 10 kickoffs for 198 yards.
The Presidents ended their season at 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the PAC. W&J clinched its 28th-consecutive winning season, the third-longest active streak in Division III, behind only Linfield (55) and Mount Union (39).
