Birmingham-Southern Upends W&J In West Palm Beach
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Washington & Jefferson built a 6-3 halftime lead, but Birmingham-Southern rallied with nine goals in the final 30 minutes to defeat the Presidents 12-8 in women's lacrosse action on Thursday evening at Lake Lytal Park.
Amanda Amerson scored seven goals for the Panthers, including four in the final 5:19 which broke an 8-8 tie. Her goal at the 5:19 mark started the run and she tacked on another 18 seconds later. Her final two goals came 50 seconds apart and clinched the win.
The game was tied 3-3 midway through the first half before W&J exploded for three goals in the final 2:47 of the first half. Senior midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), senior attacker Megan Kelly (South Park, Pa./Seton LaSalle) and freshman attacker Ashley Bulger (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) all scored during the spurt.
BSC scored four times in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but W&J tied the game 8-8 on senior midfielder Kelsey Kraus' (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) goal with 10:42 left. The Panthers (4-6) then escaped with the win after Amerson's scoring binge.
The Panthers outshot the Presidents (2-5) by a 28-18 margin and grabbed 12 of the match's 20 draw controls.
Kelly led W&J with three goals, while Fradkin contributed two goals and two assists. Kraus added two goals and one assist, while Bulger also dished out one assist to go along with her goal. Senior goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) recorded nine saves.
Washington & Jefferson returns home Sunday for a 2:00 pm game with Wittenberg.
