Calvert Scores Late to Lift W&J Over Westminster 2-1
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Junior James Calvert (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) scored with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation to lift the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team to a 2-1 Presidents’ Athletic Conference opening win against visiting Westminster Saturday afternoon.
The Titans (5-7, 0-1 PAC) opened the scoring quickly, notching a goal in the second minute of play. Ethan McCarthy recorded his seventh goal of the season from a sharp angle down near the goal post to put Westminster up 1-0.
In the 18th minute, the Presidents (6-4, 1-0 PAC) struck for the tying goal off the foot of senior Cody Peddicord (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin). Peddicord, after positioning himself to the left of the net, took a pass from junior Connor McKenzie (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) and sent his third goal of the year into a wide open net.
W&J nearly took the lead in the 28th minute when senior Sam Sestito (Beaver, Pa./Beaver), playing in his first game since the season opener, rang a shot from 25 yards out off the crossbar.
A back-and-forth second half remained tied 1-1 until Calvert collected his third goal of the campaign at 81:36, giving W&J the 2-1 edge and eventual game-winner. Peddicord and sophomore Adam Suter (Butler, Pa./Butler) assisted on the goal.
Junior Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) registered his sixth win of the season, making three saves on the day. Shots finished at 11 a piece, while W&J edged the Titans in corner kicks, 4-2.
Washington & Jefferson continues PAC action this Tuesday with a 5:00 pm home match against Saint Vincent at Alexandre Stadium.
