Calvert's Late Regulation Goal Boosts Presidents to 2-1 Win Over Waynesburg
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Junior James Calvert (Charlotte, N.C./ Ardrey Kell) scored with nine seconds remaining in regulation to send the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team home with a 2-1 Presidents’ Athletic Conference win over Waynesburg this afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
W&J improved its record to 9-6-1 overall and moved to 4-1-1 in conference action. With today’s victory, the Presidents’ 13 points in league play places them in sole possession of second place.
After playing to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes, the Yellow Jackets (9-4-2, 2-3-1 PAC) struck first, notching a goal in the 56th minute. WU’s Cody Lemke took a cross in front of the net from Tim Fields to give his team a one-goal advantage.
However, it didn’t take the Presidents long to tie things up as junior Brian Hanna (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) tallied his team-leading fifth goal of the fall nearly two minutes later. Hanna took a pass from senior Sam Sestito (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) and shot far post to tie the score at 1-1.
With time ticking away in regulation, Calvert made a push towards the net and slid into a ball from freshman Jason Menni (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) for the game winner.
Junior Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) made two saves to earn his ninth win of the season. W&J outshot the Yellow Jackets by a 16-10 margin and forced Waynesburg goalkeeper Brandon Daughtry to stop five shots.
Washington & Jefferson hits the road for a Wednesday (Oct. 30) match in Bethany, W. Va., against the Bison beginning at 3:00 pm.
