Catholic Rallies For 10-9 Win Over W&J In Landmark Game
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Catholic scored the final six goals of the game to earn a 10-9 Landmark Conference men’s lacrosse victory over Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday evening at Alexandre Stadium.
The Cardinals (6-8, 1-3) held the Presidents (4-9, 0-4) scoreless for the final 33 minutes and 24 seconds. The loss hampers W&J chances of earning a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament, but the Presidents are not eliminated yet. W&J needs wins over USMMA and Drew and additional losses by USMMA and Catholic to earn the No. 4 seed.
If Washington & Jefferson does not qualify for the Landmark Conference Tournament, the Presidents will play in the first annual Presidents’ Athletic Conference Invitational during the first week of May.
W&J fired out of the gate to take a 2-0 lead after goals by senior attacker Tom Starr (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) and freshman midfielder Siddharth Sharma (Manhasset Hills, N.Y./Herricks).
Catholic tied the game 4-4 on Nathan Chan’s goal at the 9:47 mark of the second quarter, but W&J roared back with five goals in a span of less than three minutes to claim a 9-4 lead with 3:25 left in the first half. Senior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) scored the first three goals of the spurt.
Brian Keith ended the W&J run at the 3:07 mark and CUA trailed 9-5 at halftime.
After scoring twice in the third period, Cam Feldman set up Walter Hickey for an extra-man goal with 6:31 remaining to bring the Cardinals to within 9-8. Sean Cummins fired a low shot past W&J senior goalie Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) with 2:47 remaining to the tie the game. Hickey then capped the comeback with an unassisted goal at the 1:29 mark. Catholic won the last faceoff and was able to run out the clock.
Hickey led all scorers with four goals for the Cardinals who scored three times on five extra-man chances. Harrison Holak made 11 saves to earn the win in goal.
Kirby finished with 12 saves for W&J, while Starr and Eck both produced three goals. Eck (119 career goals) is now four goals away from becoming W&J’s all-time leader. Senior midfielder John Zustra (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) added one goal and two assists, while sophomore attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor's Academy) provided one goal and one assist.
W&J continues conference play on Sunday when facing the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 1:00 pm at Alexandre Stadium. Seven Presidents will be honored before the game for Senior Day.
