CMU Defeats W&J 3-0 at Home
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College men’s soccer team suffered a 3-0 setback Wednesday night at the hands of visiting Carnegie Mellon at Alexandre Stadium.
The Tartans (6-1) came out firing offensively, registering 10 shots in the first half to the Presidents’ two. CMU scored its lone goal of the opening period in the 17th minute. Max Tassano knocked in a pass coming from the left side.
Shots for the second half were closer, a 9-4 advantage for Carnegie Mellon, and the Tartans capitalized on two of those. At 73:57, Chris Wysocki headed in a free kick to put CMU up 2-0. Six minutes later, Wysocki notched his second goal of the game on a rocket shot that flew in far post.
Junior Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) got the start in goal for W&J and made six saves in his 45 minutes of playing time. Sophomore Josh Winters (Mocksville, N.C./Calvary Baptist Day) began the second half in goal and allowed two goals while making three stops. Junior Ben Wilt (Butler, Pa./Hampton) finished the game for the Presidents, stopping two shots in the final 10 minutes.
Junior forward Brian Hanna (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) led the Presidents with three shots. W&J evens its record at 3-3 with the loss.
Washington & Jefferson embarks on a two-game road swing, beginning with a match this Saturday (Sept. 21) at 1:00 pm against Mount Union.
