Cold Shooting Dooms Presidents In Season Opener
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson women’s basketball team was unable to overcome cold shooting and 22 turnovers, as it fell to Case Western Reserve 59-33 in the season opener for both squads at the Henry Memorial Center on Tuesday night.
W&J (0-1) took a 3-0 lead 40 seconds into the game, but went the next 11:40 without a basket. The Spartans took advantage, as they went on a 20-1 run during that time to open up a double-digit lead.
The Presidents trailed 28-13 at halftime after shooting just 5-28 from the field and turning the ball over nine times.
W&J tried to mount a comeback early in the second half. The Presidents pulled the deficit as close as eight points with just under 17 minutes remaining following a basket from sophomore Kara Seamon (Morgantown, W.Va./University); however they would get no closer. Case Western went on a 16-2 run over the next seven minutes to seal the game.
Senior Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) was the only President to score in double digits with 10 points (5-13 FG). She also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
Seamon dished out three assists and added six points, while junior Emily Abraham (Canfield, Ohio/Boardman) nailed a pair of three-pointers for six points.
The Spartans were led by Erin Hollinger, who shot 5-7 from the field and poured in a game-high 12 points, while grabbing four rebounds.
Both teams struggled to keep control of the ball, with the Presidents turning the ball over 22 times, while Case Western committed 21 turnovers.
W&J shot 12-58 (.207) from the floor. The Spartans got hot from the field in the second half, shooting 13-25 in the second stanza and reached 40 percent for the game (22-55).
The Presidents return to the Henry Memorial Center on Friday evening for the first round of the W&J Tip-Off Tournament against Pitt-Greensburg at 8:00 pm. Defiance will face Otterbein in the other first round matchup. The championship tilt begins at 4:00 pm on Saturday, preceeded by the consolation match at 2:00 pm.
