CWRU Deals Presidents 72-52 Loss In Cleveland
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Evy Iacono connected on five of Case Western Reserve's 10 three-pointers and the Spartans rolled to a 72-52 women's basketball victory over Washington & Jefferson on Thursday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans (5-3) shot 47 percent overall (29-of-62), including 10-of-23 from three-point range. Iacono made 7-of-17 shots to finish with 19 points, while adding five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
CWRU never trailed after racing out to a 9-2 lead. W&J (6-3) tied the game 12-12 at the 13:21 mark after sophomore center Valerie Dunlap's (Hostetter, Pa./Latrobe) jumper, but the hosts did not allow another W&J basket for 11 minutes and 19 seconds. Case Western Reserve used an 18-1 run during that time frame to take a 34-20 lead into halftime. The Presidents shot 18 percent (6-of-34) during the opening half.
A three-pointer by senior guard Emily Abraham (Canfield, Ohio/Boardman) brought the Presidents to within 40-30 five minutes into the second half, but that was as close as the Presidents would get. Case Western recorded 28 assists on its 29 baskets and ran away with the 20-point victory. Erica Iafelice added 11 points and seven assists.
Abraham was the only President in double figures with 16 points. She made 4-of-10 three-point shots and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior forward Chelsea Apke (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) ripped down a team-high eight boards to go along with six points. three assists and two steals.
W&J plays in the Ohio Wesleyan Hoops For Hope Classic next week, starting with a Saturday night game (Dec. 29) against Westminster (Missouri) at 8:00 pm in Delaware, Ohio.
