Davenport (Mich.) Claims WATFCU Championship
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Davenport University (Mich.) shot 60 percent (37-of-62), scored 43 points off turnovers and earned the Washington Area Teachers Federal Credit Union Men’s Basketball Championship following a 100-47 victory over Washington & Jefferson College on Sunday afternoon at the Henry Memorial Center.
The Panthers (7-0), the No. 3 ranked team in the NAIA Division II national poll, never trailed after racing out to a 21-2 lead in the opening seven minutes. Damacious White, who was selected to the WATFCU All-Tournament Team, scored six points in the early spurt.
W&J (2-1) fought back with a 15-4 spurt to narrow its deficit to eight points (25-17) with 7:15 left in the first half. Freshman center Daryan Robinson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) fueled the Presidents’ comeback with five points.
That was as close as the Presidents would get though as the Panthers scored the final 10 points of the half to lead 45-21. Davenport shot 72 percent (21-of-29) in the second half.
The Panthers had six players score in double figures led by James Humphrey’s 18 points. James Nelson was selected as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after scoring 16 points and grabbing five steals. Davenport forced 30 W&J turnovers and held a 33-32 rebounding edge.
Junior guard Zach Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) was the only President in double figures with 10 points. Robinson contributed a game-high 11 rebounds for W&J which shot 31 percent (16-of-52).
Freshman guard Andy Carter (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) was named to the All-Tournament Team for W&J after averaging 10.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in the two games. He had four points against DU.
W&J continues its home schedule Tuesday when hosting Juniata at 7:00 pm.
