Dibenedetto Takes 165-Pound Championship At B-W Summa Tournament
BEREA, Ohio – Washington & Jefferson College sophomore David Dibenedetto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) posted a perfect 4-0 record to win the 165-pound championship Saturday at the Baldwin-Wallace John Summa Memorial Tournament.
Dibenedetto helped the Presidents claim seventh place of nine teams with 51 points. SUNY-Brockport won the tournament with 204 points.
Senior heavyweight Taylor Potts (Wellsburg, W.Va./John Marshall) was W&J’s only other place winner after grabbing fourth. With a 4-2 record, Potts became the fifth wrestler in school history to reach 30 victories in a year.
Dibenedetto ran his season record to 24-11 after earning four decisions. He opened with an 8-4 triumph over Dalton Stanley of Wabash before topping Dylan Zivcic of Lake Erie 6-2. Dibenedetto then defeated top-seeded Tory Cain of RIT by a 3-1 margin to move into the championship bout. He collected the title after edging William Painter of Ohio Northern 3-2.
Potts pinned his first two opponents and then beat Ohio Northern’s Cody Lovejoy 4-2. Potts fell to eventual champion John Wilkinson of SUNY-Brockport by a 4-2 margin in the semifinals to fall into the consolation bracket. He then knocked off Wabash’s Zach Stone before losing by fall in 2:17 to Lovejoy in the third-place bout.
Potts’ 31-10 record places him fourth on the college’s single-season win list. He is five victories shy of tying Kevin DeJuliis ’03 record of 36.
Washington & Jefferson hosts the 2012 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Friday at 5:00 pm at the Henry Memorial Center.
