ECAC Selects W&J’s Cunningham For Softball All-Star Team
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College junior shortstop Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) was selected to the 2013 ECAC Division III Softball South All-Star First Team on Friday.
Cunningham, who earned NFCA Second Team All-Central Region laurels shortly after the season, was one of 16 players named to the ECAC first team. She was the only Presidents’ Athletic Conference player on the first team and one of two overall from the league, joining second-team honoree Kelsey Shirey of Grove City.
Cunningham strung together one of the top offensive seasons in Washington & Jefferson history this spring by batting .453 with a W&J single-season record 62 base hits (42 singles, 16 doubles, 4 home runs). Her 47 runs set another school single-season record.
The Presidents’ leadoff hitter finished 34th in NCAA Division III in runs (1.15 rpg), 39th in doubles (0.4 dpg) and 62nd in on-base percentage (.516). Only 43 players in the nation were tougher to strikeout than Cunningham as she was retired on strikes on four times in 137 at-bats.
Entering her senior season, Cunningham ranks second in Washington & Jefferson softball history in doubles (34), third in batting average (.391, minimum 200 at-bats), fifth in runs (87), sixth in hits (141).
Cunningham led the Presidents to a 25-16 record (13-5 PAC) in 2013, which tied the 2006 squad for the third-highest win total in school history. She also helped W&J make its first PAC Tournament appearance since 2009.
