Eck Nets Six Goals To Lead Presidents Win Over Mount Union
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) totaled nine points with six goals and three assists to help Washington & Jefferson men’s lacrosse snap a five-match losing streak after defeating Mount Union 14-10 Saturday at Alexandre Stadium in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The Presidents (4-6) won for the first time since defeating another Ohio school, Wooster, 9-8 in overtime on March 6. W&J used Eck’s scoring as well as a strong defensive effort to defeat the Purple Raiders (5-5). Juniors David Behringer (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Quinn Marker (Dayton, Ohio/Archbishop Alter), sophomore Chase Bennett (Prospect, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) and freshman Sean Rock (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) combined to cause 10 of Mount Union’s 28 turnovers. Behringer also picked up five ground balls.
Mount Union led 5-3 after four consecutive goals early in the second quarter, but W&J changed momentum of the match with five goals during the final 1:55 of the first half to take a 9-6 lead into halftime. Sophomore attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor's Academy) had a hand in four of the goals during the rally, including two goals in the final 45 seconds.
Toren Moore opened the second-half scoring for UMU to make it a 9-7 game, but that was as close as the Purple Raiders would get. Junior midfielder Casey Smallwood (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) answered with back-to-back goals for the Presidents and W&J cruised to its fourth victory.
Eck is now six goals shy of breaking the W&J career goal record held by Zach Devilbiss ’09. Eck has 117 goals in 53 matches. Angell added three goals and three assists for W&J, while senior midfielder John Zustra (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) produced one goal and two assists. Freshman midfielder Zachary Fredericks (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) posted one goal and one assist, while sophomore midfielder Will Wagner (Riva, Md./South River) dished out two assists. Senior midfielder Tom Kozlowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) also scored one goal and won nine faceoffs.
Sophomore goalie Conor Crowe (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) earned the win after making seven first-half saves. Senior Ran Kirby (Cleveland, Ohio/University School) notched nine saves in the final 30 minutes.
Moore paced the Purple Raiders, who outshot W&J by a 49-34 margin, with five goals and two assists. Collin Peters made 14 saves in the loss.
W&J looks to stay in the win column on Wednesday when it hosts Catholic (6:00 pm) in a Landmark Conference game.
