Elmira Shocks W&J In Overtime
ELMIRA, N.Y. -- McKenna Light scored off a rebound just over two minutes into overtime to lift Elmira to a 2-1 Empire 8 Conference field hockey victory over Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (3-7, 1-4 E8) pulled out the win despite being outshot by a 32-13 margin. W&J also attempted 18 of the match's 26 penalty corners, but Lauren Thomas made 17 saves in the net for Elmira.
W&J (8-5, 1-3 E8) scored first three minutes into the match when junior midfielder Catherine Beaudoin (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) stuffed home her own rebound.
The lead remained that way for 47 minutes, but Elmira tied the game on Alli Gilbert's goal. The Eagles had all four shots in the overtime period until Light gave the hosts the win.
W&J looks to bounce back Tuesday at Juniata (4:00 pm) in a non-conference match.
