Etzel’s Second-Place Finish Highlights W&J At Own Wrestling Open

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College sophomore 141-pounder Josh Etzel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) notched a second-place finish to lead the Presidents at the 2011 W&J Wrestling Open at the Henry Memorial Center. 

Etzel posted a 4-1 record in the 141-pound bracket and fell to West Virginia University’s Nathan Pennesi in the championship bout by an 8-2 margin. 

Etzel opened with a fall (3:19) against WVU’s Joe Schiff and then topped Pitt-Johnstown’s Giovanni Giorgio 12-3.  He then collected another fall (5:40) against UPJ’s Tyler Chesney before earning a forfeit win in the semifinals. 

Freshman Josh Tropp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) was W&J’s only other place winner, claiming sixth in the 125-pound bracket.  He notched a 4-3 record during the day. 

Junior 149-pounder Chris Leva (Perrineville, N.J./Notre Dame) and sophomore 165-pounder David Dibenedetto (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) both earned three victories in their respective brackets. 

Washington & Jefferson returns to action next Saturday at the Mercyhurst Laker Open.
