Etzel And Freshmen Guide Presidents To Pair Of Victories At Wilkes
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Freshmen Brian Haney (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) notched two wins and Jacob Spearman (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) racked up three to help Washington & Jefferson wrestling post a 2-1 record Sunday afternoon at the Wilkes Quad. The Presidents defeated Rochester Institute of Technology (24-15) and Mount Saint Vincent (54-0), but dropped a 35-7 decision to Wilkes.
Senior 157-pounder Josh Etzel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) continued his dynamic season by notching a perfect 3-0 record. He is now 24-3 on the season.
Etzel collected a 17-9 major decision over Wilkes Phil Racciato, earned a forfeit win against Mt. St. Vincent and blanked RIT's Phil Sercu 5-0. Etzel is six victories shy of becoming the sixth wrestler in school history to win 30 matches in a season.
The 165-pound Haney opened with an 8-4 over RIT's Tyler Brooks-Lambert and also pinned MSV's John Felice in 2:45. At 125 pounds, Spearman sandwiched an 8-1 triumph over Wilkes' Guesseppe Rae between a pair of forfeits.
Senior 184-pounder Eric Kohr (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) earned victories over RIT's Nick Fisk (10-5) and Mt. St. Vincent's Dan Matrazzo (9-5).
Freshman Ezekial Stroupe (Rochester, Pa./Freedom) also notched a pair of wins. He topped RIT's Collin Doane by major decision (11-2) and MSV's Adeshola Logunleko by a 6-0 count.
The Presidents (5-6 in dual meets this winter) return to action on Saturday at Baldwin-Wallace's John Summa Tournament.
