Etzel and Spearman Pace Presidents At Mount Union Duals
ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Washington & Jefferson defeated Muskingum 42-6, but dropped matches to Gettysburg (24-16), Mount Union (37-11) and Messiah (37-7) on Saturday at the Mount Union Duals.
The Presidents were led by junior 157-pounder Josh Etzel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth-Forward) and freshman 125-pounder Jacob Spearman (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster), who both posted perfect 4-0 records.
Etzel improved to 12-2 on the season after starting the day with a 6-0 shutout of Gettysburg's Tyler Cunningham. He then edged Mount Union's Josh Garrison 5-2 before notching major decisions in the Messiah and Muskingum bouts.
Spearman now owns a 9-1 record during his first collegiate season. He topped Gettysburg's Matt Laux (14-4) and Mount Union's Dan Hoberney (19-6) before racking up a 6-2 win against Messiah and a 15-0 major decision versus the Muskies.
W&J is back in action on Dec. 1 at the RIT Invitational in Rochester, N.Y.
