First-Half Surge Gives CMU Men's Soccer Victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Carnegie Mellon scored three goals in just over five minutes early in the first half and downed the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team 5-1 Wednesday night at Alexandre Stadium.Mike Ferraco scored a pair of goals four minutes apart to give the Tartans a 2-0 lead.  A minute later, Max Tassano put home his first of two goals off a set play.

Freshman Paul Boerema (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) scored the first goal of his career to get the Presidents on the board in the 76th minute.  Freshman Derek Meuser (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) had a shot blocked, but Boerema was in position to clean up the rebound and put the ball into the back of the net.

Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Ihrig (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) stopped four shots in 33 minutes of action.  The Presidents were outshot 11-2 on the night.

W&J begins a three-game road swing on Saturday afternoon when it faces Capital at 4:00 pm.
