Four Presidents Named To Collegiate Baseball’s Players To Watch

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College juniors Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N.Y./Canisius), Eddie Nogay (Weirton, W. Va./Madonna), Ronny Peirish (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) were all recently selected as “NCAA Division III Players to Watch” during the 2013 season by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

Players were chosen in a poll of Division III coaches. A total of 11 Presidents’ Athletic Conference athletes were mentioned led by W&J’s four.

McLain garnered First Team All-PAC accolades last year and was named as an ECAC All-Star after batting .391, while starting all 46 games at third base. He tied Peirish for second on the team with 38 runs batted in, scored 35 runs and stole 10 bases.

Nogay, an All-PAC second team right-handed pitcher, posted a 7-0 record along with three saves in 14 appearances. He led the team with a 2.01 earned run average and posted a pair of complete game shutouts. Nogay struck out 40 batters, while walking just 17 in 71.2 innings of work. He enters his junior season with a perfect 10-0 career record on the mound.

Peirish, also an All-PAC second team choice, tied Staniscia for the team lead with three home runs and batted .344, while slugging .466 in 46 games. Nine of Peirish’s 56 hits went for extra bases and he also stole nine bags. Behind the plate, Peirish posted a .978 fielding percentage and threw out four potential base stealers.

Staniscia led all PAC players with 102 total bases, 67 hits and eight triples, while ranking third in both  RBI (47) and runs scored (46). He also led the team with a .404 batting average and 21 extra-base hits in 46 games as the Presidents’ starting right fielder. Following last season, Staniscia earned numerous accolades including First Team All-PAC, First Team D3Baseball.com All-Mideast Region, First Team ABCA/Rawlings All-Mideast Region and ECAC South Region All-Star.

W&J opens the 2013 season with a conference doubleheader at Bethany on March 9 beginning at 1:00 pm.
