Fradkin Nets Seven As Presidents Put End To Losing Streak
DELAWARE, Ohio -- Washington & Jefferson fell behind 2-0, but roared back with a 9-1 spurt that helped the Presidents defeat host Ohio Wesleyan 17-10 in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Selby Stadium.
The Presidents (3-9) snapped an eight-match losing skid behind a nine-point performance by senior attacker Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's School For Girls). Fradkin fired in seven goals on 13 shot attempts and added a pair of assists. She also grabbed five ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Patricia Ryan scored twice for OWU (3-11) in the opening 2:25, but W&J answered with five-straight goals, including three by Fradkin, during a span of five minutes. Ryan scored again at the 18:31 mark to being the Battling Bishops to within 5-3; however, the Presidents rolled off four more goals for a 9-3 lead. Fradkin connected for the first two goals of the run.
Fradkin's sixth goal of the first half stretched the lead to 11-4 with 75 seconds left in the first half, but Annie Swanson scored twice in the final 35 seconds to close the gap to 11-6 at the break.
W&J put the game away with the first three goals of the second half. Senior midfielder Kelsey Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) netted the first goal, while classmate Megan Kelly (South Park, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) provided the next two.
Senior goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) made nine saves to earn her 41st career victory. She also recorded the 500th of her career and now owns 508.
Fradkin now has 170 goals and 25 assists in 55 career matches. She is third in school history in goals, assists and points.
Kelly scored five goals on seven shot attempts, while Kraus supplied three goals and one assist. Freshman midfielder Diana Harvey (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) added two goals and one assist for the Presidents, who held advantages in shots (33-24), ground balls (23-16) and draw controls (15-14). Harvey and classmate Danielle Cochrane (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) both grabbed five draw controls.
Swanson and Ryan both finished with four-goal efforts for OWU.
The Presidents will now set their focus to Wednesday's Senior Night game against Saint Vincent (7:00 pm) at Alexandre Stadium. The winner of the match will earn the No. 2 seed for the first-ever Presidents' Athletic Conference Invitational which will be hosted by Thiel in Greenville (Apr. 26-27).
