Freshmen Once Again Power Presidents In 3-1 Win
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Freshmen Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and Kelly Knisel (Weatogue, Conn./Simsbury) scored nine minutes apart to start the second half and fuel Washington & Jefferson's 3-1 field hockey win over Wilson on Wednesday evening at Cameron Stadium.
The Presidents (7-3) and Phoenix (3-7) played to a scoreless tie after 35 minutes, but W&J had all seven shots during the opening half.
Steffey got the scoring going two and a half minutes into the second half off a pass from Knisel. Nine minutes later, junior Catherine Beaudoin (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) set up Knisel for the Presidents' second goal. Beaudoin followed 11 minutes later with her sixth goal of the season.
Wilson ended the shutout bid with 7:14 remaining on a goal by Hillary Swartz. The Presidents outshot the Phoenix overall by a 21-3 margin. Sophomore goalie Morgan Brozena (Telford, Pa./Souderton) made one save and nearly produced her fifth shutout of the season.
The Presidents, who also held a 16-1 advantage in penalty corners, return to Empire 8 Conference play on Saturday morning when hosting Hartwick at 10:00 am.
