Frostburg State Downs Presidents In Women's Soccer Opener
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Adria Graham scored a pair of goals to help Frostburg State build a three-goal lead and defeat Washington & Jefferson 4-1 in non-conference women's soccer action Tuesday night at Alexandre Stadium.
The Bobcats (2-0) began to put a damper on the Presidents' season opener in the 23rd minute when Graham scored off a feed from Stephanie Fazenbaker. The rest of the half was played evenly, but Frostburg State struck twice during a 6:30 span early in the second half to establish control.
Following a loose ball after her own corner kick, Liz Seligman lofted a shot that deflected off the far post and past W&J sophomore goalkeeper Mattie Follen (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon). Graham, who had a hat trick in FSU's season opener, then slammed home a point-blank shot at the 56:46 mark for a three-goal cushion.
W&J (0-1) answered Graham's second goal with senior midfielder Dawn Murphy's (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) 14th career goal under two minutes later. Senior forward Chrissy Marcius (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and sophomore midfielder Jess Skovira (scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) assisted on the Presidents' first goal of 2012. The assist was the 19th of Marcius' career which ties her with teammate Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) for fourth place in school history.
The Bobcats sealed the victory when Mack headed home Kyrsten Buck's corner kick in the 83rd minute.
Frostburg State defeated W&J last season by a 3-1 margin and owns an 8-0-1 all-time record against the Presidents, who were outshot by a 14-5 margin. Katie Smith made two saves in goal for the Bobcats, while Follen, a Kent State transfer, also grabbed five stops.
W&J begins a four-match road trip on Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan (2:00 pm).
