Frostburg State Sweeps Presidents At Brooks Park

WASHINGTON, Pa. –  Frostburg State posted a 7-0 victory in game one and then held off a late Washington & Jefferson rally to collect a 7-6 win in the second softball contest on Sunday at Brooks Park.

The Bobcats (20-14) received all the runs they would need in game one in the third inning on Caitlin Lovend’s three-run homer.  FSU tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the seven-run win.  Lauren Scrivener fired a six-hit shutout and fanned six Presidents.

W&J (12-16) was led in game one by freshman first baseman Paige Deley (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour), who went 2-for-3.  Junior pitcher Erin Shuman (Chester, W.Va./Oak Glen) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing four earned runs on 12 hits in a complete game effort.

The Bobcats took advantage of two W&J errors in the first inning of game two to establish a 6-0 lead.  FSU added a single run in the fourth, but the Presidents got that run back in the bottom half of the frame when sophomore Madison Rotto (Sarver, Pa./Freeport) drilled her third home run of the season.

Freshman left fielder Breanna Gleason (Baden, Pa./Ambridge) doubled to lead off the sixth inning and scored one batter late after sophomore shortstop Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Twp.) also doubled.  Two Frostburg State errors led to four Presidents’ runs in the bottom of the seventh, but a lineout with a runner on second base ended the game.

Jordan Wright earned the win on the mound for FSU, allowing two earned runs on five hits.

Deley had two more hits to pace the Presidents in game two and she also scored one time.  Shuman hurled 6 1/3 innings of relief in the second game and held the Bobcats to one unearned run on six hits.

W&J returns to conference play on Wednesday with a 3:30 pm road doubleheader at Chatham.
