FSU Tops W&J 15-8 At Alexandre Stadium
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson held a three-goal lead during the first quarter, but Frostburg State used a pair of big runs to fight back and earn a 15-8 men’s lacrosse victory on Wednesday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
The Bobcats (6-2) scored six consecutive goals from late in the first quarter until early in the third period and then added seven-straight tallies between the third and fourth quarters.
Back-to-back goals from senior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) put the Presidents (3-4) ahead 4-1 at the 1:09 mark of the first quarter, but FSU received a lift from Devon Stailey’s goal 15 seconds before the opening period ended.
Four-straight Bobcat goals in the second quarter gave the visitors a 6-4 edge at the break. Chris Rios made it a 7-4 FSU advantage five minutes into the third quarter; however, freshman midfielder Zachary Fredericks (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) and Eck scored 79 seconds apart to bring W&J to within 7-6.
Frostburg State then took control with seven-straight goals and Devin Colegrove played a role in nearly all of them, scoring twice and assisting on three others.
Spenser Love added three goals and one assist for the Bobcats, who outshot the Presidents 52-21 and also held a 43-26 edge in ground balls. Tyler Haines allowed six of the W&J goals and finished with seven saves in a little over 56 minutes of action.
Eck paced the Presidents with three goals and one assist, while sophomore attacker Tim Angell (Andover, Mass./Governor’s Academy) contributed one goal and one assist. Sophomore goalie Conor Crowe (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) notched a career-high 19 saves in the loss.
The Presidents, who committed 27 turnovers, will try to snap their three-match losing streak on Saturday when returning to Landmark Conference play with a 1:00 pm road game at Scranton.
