Goucher Selected As Preseason Men’s Lacrosse Favorite; W&J Seventh

TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference released the 2013 men’s lacrosse preseason poll on Wednesday morning and Washington & Jefferson was predicted to finish seventh.  The voting was conducted by the league’s coaches.

Defending conference champion Goucher tops the preseason poll in the seven-team league with five first-place votes and 55 overall points.  Drew picked up two first-place votes and 48 points, while Scranton (36), Catholic (23), Susquehanna (23), Merchant Marine Academy (17) and W&J (15) rounded out the predicted order of finish.

Washington & Jefferson is competing in the Landmark Conference for a second season this spring as an affiliate member.  Last year, W&J placed sixth in the league standings with a 1-5 record.  The Presidents’ first-ever conference win was recorded on April 21 in King’s Point, N.Y., after knocking off USMMA by a 9-8 margin on junior Casey Smallwood’s (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) goal with 58 seconds remaining.

The 2013 Presidents will be led by a new head coach as Daniel Usaj makes his debut in 10 days when Washington & Jefferson travels to Thiel for a 1:00 pm match.  Senior attacker Joseph Eck (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly), a Second Team All-Landmark Conference choice, highlights the Presidents’ returnees.

W&J competed as a NCAA Division III independent for 10 years before joining the Landmark Conference.
