Grove City Knocks Off W&J In PAC Swimming & Diving

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Defending Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion Grove City College swept a swimming & diving dual meet from Washington & Jefferson College on Saturday afternoon at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.  The Grove City men were victorious by a score of 149-132, while the Wolverine women notched a 151-117 triumph. 

The W&J men (4-2, 1-2 PAC) were led by a pair of double winners, senior John Szott (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and sophomore Ben Mancini (Oreland, Pa./Springfield Township).  Szott claimed both diving events, posting 248.4 points on the 1-meter board and 227.85 points at three meters.  Mancini won both long distance freestyle events as he touched first in the 500 (5:08.67) and 1,000 (10:42.40). 

The Presidents also received victories from senior Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) in the 100 backstroke (56.72) and freshman Armando Paolino (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug Regional) in the 100 butterfly (55.72). 

The women’s team (5-2, 2-2 PAC) had two victories during the afternoon.  Senior Jami Andrews (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) earned a win in the breaststroke (1:12.69), while sophomore Jessica Sweitzer (Laurel, Md./Seton Keough) recorded the first touch in the 500 freestyle (5:23.32).

Both Presidents’ squads will be back in conference action on Wednesday at 6:00 pm when facing Saint Vincent in Latrobe, Pa.
