Grove City Women Snap W&J’s 23-Meet Win Streak
GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson College women’s swimming & diving team saw its streak of 23 consecutive dual meet wins come to an end on Saturday following a 151-137 loss to Grove City on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverine men completed the sweep with a 154-129 triumph. The Presidents’ women dropped to 8-1 overall, while the men’s squad is 3-4 overall. The women’s team had not lost a dual meet since falling at Grove City on Jan. 16, 2010.
W&J was led by senior Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone) who posted record-setting performances in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in both events.
In 11-dive lists, Haver notched 461.77 points on the 1-meter board which set conference, school and pool records. Through six dives, Haver amassed 266.32 points which is another NCAA-qualifying mark.
At three meters, she collected 443.55 points which established a new conference record.
Senior Justin Weifenbach (Corapolis, Pa./Montour) claimed both men’s diving events with 420.53 points at 1-meter and 426.97 points at three meters.
Senior Andy Rish (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep) won the 100 backstroke (55.38), while classmate Michael Boutwell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) claimed the 1000 freestyle (10:28.00).
The Presidents return home next Saturday for a 1:00 pm dual meet with Penn State-Behrend.
