Hanna's Early Goal Lifts W&J to Season Opening Win
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Brian Hanna's (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler Area) goal in the seventh minute lifted the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team to a 1-0 season opening win over Mount Aloysius Saturday night at Alexandre Stadium.
Hanna’s strike came at the 7:54 mark of the first half. The junior forward slid into an accurate pass in front of the net off the foot of classmate Chris Watson (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca).
While both teams had a number of scoring chances throughout the remainder of the game, Hanna’s goal proved to be the game winner. The Presidents outshot the Mounties by a 17-10 margin, and did not allow the opponent any corner kick opportunities. W&J forced Mount Aloysius goalkeeper Justin Hann to make seven stops in the match.
W&J starting keeper Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) recorded the fifth shutout of his career in the win, making four saves.
The Presidents begin the year 1-0 while the Mounties dropped to 1-1 on the young season.
Washington & Jefferson travels to Pittsburgh this Wednesday Sept. 4 for a 4:00 pm match at La Roche.
