WASHINGTON, Pa. - Washington & Jefferson senior wide receiver/kick returner Alex Baroffio (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and sophomore defensive tackle Jon Turner (Freeport, Pa./Freeport) both received weekly football awards on Tuesday.
Turner earned a national honor after being selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week, presented by Scoutware. He was one of two defensive tackles honored, joining Coe College senior Mitch Montgomery.
A day after earning the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week award, Baroffio earned the same honor for the ECAC Division III Southwest Region. Baroffio racked up 257 all-purpose yards at Wooster on Saturday to help W&J post a 58-21 season-opening victory.
Baroffio’s 257 all-purpose yards were the eighth-highest total during Division III’s opening week. Five of his returns (three punts and two kickoffs) directly helped lead W&J scoring drives.
Baroffio is 17th in NCAA Division III in punt return average (17.3 ypr) and 22nd in kickoff returns (30.7 ypr). His 561 career punt return yards ranks third among active NCAA Division III players. Only three active players nationally have returned more punts (52) than Baroffio during their careers.
Turner made the most of his first career start by totaling nine tackles, including eight solo stops, and two sacks. Both of the sacks came on third-down plays to end Wooster drives. His first sack came on the final play of the second quarter, while his final one occurred late in the second quarter.
