Hood Tops W&J In Overtime

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Hood’s Reggie Daniels drained a 27-foot three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into overtime and the Blazers hung on for a 71-70 men’s basketball victory over Washington & Jefferson College in the consolation game of the Washington Area Credit Union Tournament at the Henry Memorial Center on Sunday.

Ohio Northern topped Penn State-Beaver 78-60 to win the Second Annual Washington Area Credit Union Tournament.  ONU's Lucas Pennington was named the Most Valuable Player.

Hood nearly turned the ball over when in-bounding with 4.4 seconds remaining in regulation and trailing 59-56, but Daniels snagged the loose ball and connected on the long triple to tie the game.

The Blazers scored eight of the first ten points during overtime to build a six-point lead. W&J battled back as senior guard Zach Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) sank a layup and sophomore Mike Resnik (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport) followed with a pair of free throws, cutting the lead to down to just two with 11 seconds to play.

However, on the ensuing inbound play, Justin Bowens broke away from the Presidents’ defense for a break away layup to seal the game for Hood.  Bellhy drained a triple at the buzzer for the final margin.

W&J led by as many as nine points during the opening half before a 15-3 Blazers’ run put Hood ahead 29-25 after 20 minutes.

Sophomore forward Nate Bellhy (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) tied the game at 35 with jumper off the glass five minutes into the second half.  The lead would change hands four more times during the next nine minutes before Zach Bellhy gave W&J a one-point edge with a layup.

The Presidents built a five-point lead with 25 seconds remaining, but Bowens cut into the edge with an old-fashioned three-point play. Following a free throw by Zach Bellhy, Daniels nailed his first career three-pointer to send the game to overtime.

Zach Bellhy paced W&J with 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. He added six rebounds and four steals.  Nate Bellhy produced his second-straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Resnik added 15 points.

W&J shot 44 percent (26-59) from the field but was undone by 25 turnovers.  Cameron Cook led the Blazers, who shot 39 percent (26-67), with 17 points. Trey Quinn added 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

The Presidents look to get into the win column for the first time in 2012 when they travel to Juniata on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
