Josh Staniscia Earns NCBWA Honorable-Mention Laurels
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College sophomore right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) earned National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division III honorable-mention accolades Thursday for the organization’s Player of the Week Award.
Staniscia was one of nine players recognized in the honorable mention categories. Bruce Maxwell of Birmingham-Southern College was named National Player of the Week.
The Presidents (11-1) recently completed the first undefeated week long trip to Florida in school history (7-0). Staniscia hit .526 in five games in the Sunshine State last week with 11 runs scored and nine RBI. He scored five runs and knocked in two during W&J’s sweep of 2008 National Champion Trinity (Conn.) on Thursday and followed that performance with a 2-4 day at the plate, including a triple, against sixth-ranked Wisc.-Stevens Point on Friday.
He entered this week as the third-leading hitter in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with a .472 batting average (17-36). Staniscia has hit safely in 10 of W&J’s 12 games this season, including six multi-hit performances.
In 12 games this spring, Staniscia leads the team with 30 total bases, four triples and a .714 slugging percentage. He has also posted 14 RBI, five stolen bases and a .510 on base percentage.
Staniscia earned First Team All-PAC accolades by hitting .347 with one home run and 19 RBI in 147 at-bats last year. He was W&J’s team leader in hits (51), doubles (12), triples (3) and total bases (72) and racked up hitting streaks of seven, nine and 14 games.
W&J hosts a PAC doubleheader against Saint Vincent on Saturday at Ross Memorial Park (1:00 pm).
