King’s Late Deflection Gives W&J 2-1 Victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior forward Arielle King (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) deflected home a shot off a penalty corner with 3:27 remaining to lift Washington & Jefferson to a 2-1 non-conference field hockey victory over Susquehanna Tuesday at Cameron Stadium.

Junior forward Amanda Pflumm (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) slapped a shot from the left side of the goal and King’s re-direction past Crusader goalie Erin Ferguson produced the eventual game winner.

The Presidents (10-2), who have now won at least 10 matches in five out of the last six years, opened the scoring 78 seconds into the contest as Pflumm netted her fifth goal of the season.
Susquehanna (4-10) tied the game with nine minutes left in the first half on Heather Moore’s goal.

The score remained that way until King’s deflection helped W&J earn the victory.  The Presidents were aided by the goaltending of senior Shelby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda), who finished with nine saves.  Ferguson stopped six shots for the Crusaders, who were outshot by a 15-13 margin.

W&J returns to Empire 8 Conference play Saturday when traveling to Elmira for a noon match in New York.
