Kraus and Fradkin Deliver Presidents’ First Win Of 2013

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Senior midfielders Kelsey Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul’s School for Girls) both scored four goals to lift Washington & Jefferson to a 12-5 women’s lacrosse victory over Hood (Md.) on Sunday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.

The win was the first at W&J for Head Coach Tracy Coyne and the 262nd overall during her 25-year career, 15 of which were spent at the University of Notre Dame (1997-2011).

Fradkin netted the first goal of the match just over a minute in, but the Blazers (2-1) answered back four minutes later on Megan Feldtmose’s goal.

The game remained tied until the 15:20 mark when senior attacker Megan Kelly (South Park, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) found the back of the net on a free position shot.  Kelly’s goal ignited a six-goal W&J spurt in which Kraus scored three times.  Kraus’ tally with 4:07 left in the first half gave Washington & Jefferson a 6-1 halftime lead.

Kraus netted her third goal just over five minutes into the second half for a six-goal edge.  Hood closed to within 7-3 midway through the second half, but Fradkin recorded goals four minutes apart to help seal the triumph.

Kelly finished with two goals and one assist for the Presidents, who owned a 38-15 shot advantage.  Freshmen Ashley Bulger (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Diana Harvey (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) also scored for W&J.  In addition, Harvey notched six caused turnovers for a defense that forced 29 Blazer miscues.

Senior goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) picked up her 39th collegiate victory after making four saves.

Lauren Couch stopped 20 shots for Hood in the loss.  Bailey Czech paced the Blazer offense with three goals.

W&J (1-1) rounds out its three-match home stand to begin the season on Thursday versus Waynesburg at 5:00 pm.
