Kristen Galligan Places Ninth At NCAA Indoor 5,000 Meters
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Washington & Jefferson College sophomore Kristen Galligan (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) narrowly missed out on earning the second All-America honor of her standout career after placing ninth in the 5,000-meter event at the 2013 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship Saturday at North Central College’s Al B. Carius Track.
Galligan finished just 6.39 seconds back of eighth-place finisher Julia Sizek of the University of Chicago for the final All-America award. Galligan’s time of 17:21.60 was the second-fastest of her career.
Christy Cazzola of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (16:56.58) won her third career national title in the field of 15 runners after edging out Calvin’s Nicole Michmerhuizen (16:57.67) at the finish line. Cazzola also won the NCAA Cross Country Championship during the fall.
Galligan became just the third W&J female student-athlete in school history to compete at the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships. She earned her spot in the field after winning the ECAC Division III championship (17:04.75) last week at The Armory in New York City.
During the fall season, Galligan became the first cross country runner (male or female) to earn NCAA All-America honors after claiming 12th place at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships. Galligan is coached by second-year Head Coach Shawn Marek.
