Late Goal Slips Presidents Past Franciscan 3-2

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Freshman Brian Hanna (Alison Park, Pa./Shaler) scored the game-winning goal with just under 11 minutes remaining as Washington and Jefferson held off Franciscan 3-2 in men’s soccer action Wednesday evening.

Hanna picked up his first career game-winner by ripping a shot just inside the left post.  He also tallied an assist during the game for a career-high three point day.

Sophomore Sam Sestito (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) opened the scoring just three minutes into the game after collecting a cross from Hanna and beating goalkeeper Tim Vander Woulde.

The Barons (1-7) tied the game just before halftime, but sophomore Cody Peddicord (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) put the Presidents back in front just 2:07 into the second stanza.  Peddicord settled a bouncing pass from freshman James Calvert (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell) and found the back of the net.

Allen scored again for Franciscan in the 75th minute to force a 2-2 tie, but Hanna sent W&J home a winner with his goal at the 79:01 mark.

Senior goalkeeper Pete Tomlinson (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) made six saves to help the Presidents halt their three-game losing skid.

W&J (3-5) opens PAC play on Saturday at Geneva at 1:30 pm.
