Leva and Haney Lead Presidents At Abele Invitational

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College wrestling team placed ninth of 13 teams Saturday at the Ursinus Abele Invitational.  W&J posted 29 points, 80 behind tournament winner SUNY-Oneonta.

Ursinus was second with 92 points, while Naval Academy Prep (79.5), WPI (70.5) and Hunter (61.5) rounded out the top five teams.

The Presidents were led by senior 141-pounder Chris Leva (Perrineville, N.J./Notre Dame) and freshman 165-pounder Brian Haney (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette)

Leva collected a 4-2 record after recording a fall (4:26) in his opening match against David Amann of SUNY-Oneonta.  He fell into the consolation bracket after being topped 9-3 by the eventual runner-up, WPI's Tyler Tilbe.  Leva rallied for three wins, including a pair by fall, before being eliminated in the consolation semifinals.

Haney also opened with a fall, defeating UMBC's Quentin McLain in 3:38.  Bracket runner-up Justin Marsh knocked off Haney by technical fall in the next match, but Haney responded with two wins before falling in the consolation semifinals.

Senior 157-pounder Nick Sewell (New York, N.Y./Blair Academy) and freshman 149-pounder Alex Powell (Venetia, Pa./Ringgold) both notched two wins in their respective consolation brackets.

W&J returns to dual-meet action in 10 days at Waynesburg (7:00 pm).
