Marcius and Murphy Earn CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Washington & Jefferson College junior women’s soccer players Chrissy Marcius (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) {above} and Dawn Murphy (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) {below} were named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Division III Academic All-District Team on Friday.

Marcius and Murphy are members of the District 4 team, which is made up of all NCAA Division III women’s soccer programs in Pennsylvania.  The pair are automatically nominated for Academic All-American honors along with the other First Team Academic All-District members from the additional seven regions around the country.

Marcius is a child development education major and has earned a 3.49 GPA.  On the field, Marcius led the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and finished 14th in the nation with 14 assists.  She was the Presidents’ second-leading scorer with 26 points and added six goals. Marcius sits in seventh place all-time with 22 career goals and fifth with 64 total points.

Murphy has achieved a 3.74 GPA as a history major at W&J.  She finished third on the team with nine goals and added one assist for a career-high 19 points. Murphy is ninth in school history with 11 assists and has the 11th-highest point total at 37.

Also representing the Presidents’ Athletic Conference on the Academic All-District Team were Tyler Dever of Westminster and Arielle Goyzueta from Grove City.

For years the Academic All-America program had been separated into “university” and “college” divisions to distinguish Division I honorees from the rest. Now, thanks to support from NCAA corporate partner Capital One and contributions from the Divisions II and III identity campaigns, the Capital One Academic All-America program will recognize 48 national teams annually in 12 sports – one team each for Divisions I, II and III, and a college division squad that combines NAIA institutions, two-year colleges and Canadian schools.  Nominees must have at least a 3.30 grade-point average and be a sophomore, junior or senior.

Murphy and Marcius helped W&J compile a 14-4-1 overall record and earn the regular-season PAC title.  The team’s 13 game unbeaten streak set a school record.
