Marcius Collects Seven Points As W&J Wallops UPG 8-0
GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson had five different goal scorers and cruised to its first win of the 2012 season after recording an 8-0 non-conference women's soccer victory at Pitt-Greensburg Sunday afternoon.
The Presidents (1-4), who attempted 28 of the match's 30 total shots, received a pair of goals and three assists from senior forward Chrissy Marcius (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin), while junior forward Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) notched a hat trick with all three of her tallies coming in the second half.
W&J opened the scoring 6:37 into the match when senior midfielder Kelsey Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) collected a rebound and beat UPG goalie Toni Gockley.
The lead was upped to 2-0 six minutes later when Marcius' cross was directed home by senior midfielder Dawn Murphy (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). Marcius made it 3-0 in the 21st minute after gathering her own rebound and slipping a shot past Gockley.
Senior defender Lauren Reynolds (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) assisted on Marcius' second goal at the 66:15 mark and Shipley followed with the first of her three goals 33 seconds later. Marcius helped make it a 6-0 lead 48 seconds after Shipley's goal as she fed junior midfielder Nikki Hladik (Renfrew, Pa./Butler), who one-timed her cross into the back of the net. Shipley tacked on a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes.
Sophomore Mattie Follen (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) played the first 27 minutes and earned the win for W&J without having to make a save. Freshman Sarah Youngblood (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) corraled two saves the rest of the way.
