Men's Soccer Posts Second Consecutive Shutout Win
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – For the second consecutive game, the Washington & Jefferson men’s soccer team recorded a shutout victory after downing La Roche 2-0 Wednesday afternoon.
The Presidents are off to their best start in recent memory and have not begun a year 2-0 since 2005.
Wednesday’s match was all about applying pressure in the Red Hawks' end as W&J fired 11 shots in the first half alone. Senior Tad Piscatelli (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) was able to beat La Roche goalkeeper Nick Sabol near the 33rd minute to give W&J a 1-0 lead at the half. Piscatelli’s 11th career goal was tapped in near the front of the net and sophomore Adam Suter (Butler, Pa./Butler) was credited with the assist, the first of his career.
W&J added nine shots in period two. In the 71st minute, freshman Justin Nolfi (Irwin, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) notched his first collegiate goal on a breakaway that provided the Presidents with some insurance down the stretch.
For the game, W&J outshot La Roche 20-12. Reigning PAC Goalkeeper of the Week Jon Best (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) got the start in goal and picked up the win, moving him to 2-0 on the young season. Junior transfer Ben Wilt (Butler, Pa./Hampton) entered 45 seconds into the start of the second half to finish the shutout. Both W&J keepers recorded three saves.
W&J returns home to face Denison this Saturday (Sept. 7) at Alexandre Stadium beginning at 1:00 pm.
