Mercyhurst Starts Quick; Holds Off W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. –  Mercyhurst opened the match with eight first-quarter goals and defeated the Washington & Jefferson College men’s water polo team by a score of 19-11 on Friday night at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.

Sophomore Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) led W&J (6-10) offensively with five goals to up his season total to 44. He added two assists and a pair of steals.

Freshman Ben McGrath (Palos Verdes Peninsula, Calif./Loyola) supplied three goals and three steals, while classmate Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) collected two goals and two steals.

Senior Alex Shuey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) tallied one goal, while classmate Joey Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) handed out three assists.

Sophomore Chris DeNunzio (Greenwich, Conn./Canterbury) and junior Dan Francisco (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) split time in goal for the Presidents.  DeNunzio stopped eight shots and Francisco totaled three saves.

W&J returns to the pool on Saturday morning for its final home match of 2012 against Gannon (11:00 am).
