Mid-November Basketball Tournaments Announced For Henry Center

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Glenn Gutierrez announced the field for the First Annual Washington Area Teachers Federal Credit Union Men’s Basketball Tournament on Monday.
For the seventh consecutive year, W&J Head Women’s Basketball Coach Jina DeRubbo will also host a four-team tournament (Nov. 18-19) on the same weekend, featuring perennial conference championship contenders in NCAA Division III women’s basketball.
The men’s tournament, which will be hosted at the Henry Memorial Center on Nov. 19-20, 2011, features W&J, Muskingum, Pitt-Titusville and Davenport (Mich.). Official game times and first-round matchups will be released during the fall. Men’s games will be played at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm (W&J vs. TBA) on Saturday evening with consolation (2:00 pm) and championship (4:00 pm) games Sunday.
The women’s games will be played on Friday (6/8:00 pm) and Saturday (2/4:00 pm). Defiance College and Otterbein College will meet in the opening round on Friday at 6:00 pm, while W&J faces The University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg at 8:00 pm.
“We are excited to host this tournament and hopefully and students and fans will be treated to a great two days of college basketball,” said Gutierrez, who owns a 71-68 record in his five seasons with the Presidents. “We are extremely appreciative for the support of The Washington Area Teachers Federal Credit Union. Without their efforts, it would be very difficult to have a first-class tournament. Our teams are looking forward to a great weekend of basketball and we hope our students and fans will enjoy the games.”
Davenport University (Mich.) was the 11th-ranked team in NAIA Division II last season and lost in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament after setting a school record with 29 victories. Muskingum University is a member of the NCAA Division III Ohio Athletic Conference, while the University of Pittsburgh-Titusville competes at the Division I level in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
Defiance College, located in northwest Ohio, has won 29 women’s games during the past two years, while Otterbein College (Westerville, Ohio) will make its third appearance in W&J’s tournament since 2005. Pitt-Greensburg has been a fixture in the postseason in recent history, including a 2009 appearance in the ECAC South Tournament.
