Murphy, Saussol Key as W&J Upends Carnegie Mellon
Washington, Pa. - Junior Dawn Murphy (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored two goals and senior goalkeeper Stephanie Saussol (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) made eight saves as the Washington & Jefferson women’s soccer team shutout Carnegie Mellon 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium.
Saussol and freshman Heather Betancourt (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle) combined to give the Presidents their third consecutive shutout for the first time since 2008. Saussol made eight saves, including seven in the first half and Betancourt stopped both shots she faced to hold off the Tartans (5-3).
Murphy headed a ball past goalkeeper Anna Albi to give the Presidents a 1-0 haltime lead. She struck again in the middle of the second half as she received a pass from sophomore Holly Shipley (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) and found the back of the net.
Shipley assisted on both Presidents (5-3) goals, while junior Chrissy Marcius (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) picked up her Presidents’ Athletic Conference leading ninth assist of the season.
W&J travels to Ohio to face Franciscan in its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
