Muskingum Halts Presidents’ Win Streak
WASHINGTON, Pa. – J.P. Finnicum’s sixth-inning grand slam helped lift Muskingum to a 6-3 victory over 19th-ranked Washington & Jefferson College in non-conference baseball action from Ross Memorial Park on Tuesday.
The loss ended W&J’s (24-5, 15-2 PAC) eight-game winning streak, while Muskingum (15-18, 7-7 OAC) halted its own five-game skid.
After the Muskies grabbed a 1-0 second-inning lead, W&J quickly responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore third baseman Kyle McLain (East Amherst, N. Y./Canisius) tripled with one out and scored one batter later on a ground out by senior left fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory).
Sophomore catcher Ronnie Peirish (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) doubled home senior shortstop Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius) during the third inning to put W&J ahead.
The score remained the same until the sixth when Muskingum reclaimed the lead with a five-run inning, highlighted by Finnicum’s two-out slam on his first homer of the season.
The Presidents built a threat in the bottom of the ninth. After Peirish knocked in a run with a single to right, W&J brought the tying run to the plate, but Muskies’ pitcher Logan Addison enduced a ground out to end the game.
Addison earned his fourth save of the season in relief of Alex VanDine. VanDine went eight innings, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits while striking out three. Sophomore Marc Rizzo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was charged with his first loss of the spring after giving up five runs (one earned) in 1.2 innings.
Peirish led W&J at the plate with two hits and a pair of RBI, while Klinec and sophomore right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) both produced two base hits.
T.J. Howsare and Adam Bennett each collected two hits to pace the Muskies.
W&J returns to PAC play on Wednesday when it travels to Thiel for a 4:00 pm game. The Presidents will be looking to sweep the Tomcats after taking the teams’ doubleheader in Washington last week.
