WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Muskingum wrapped up its 2013 softball season with a non-conference sweep of Washington & Jefferson on Tuesday at Brooks Park. The Muskies (28-12) won game one 2-0 and then earned the sweep with a 5-3 triumph in the second contest.
Sarah Browning (5 innings) and Rachel Bannister (2) combined to limit the Presidents to a pair of base hits in the opener. The Muskies scored all seven of their runs, six of which were unearned, during the fifth inning.
Freshman pitcher Krista McCartney (Salem, Ohio/United Local) suffered the loss for W&J, snapping her five-game win streak. She allowed five runs (one earned) on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.
W&J (24-14) scored first in game two as freshman first baseman Emily Watson (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) led off the second inning with a single and scored on an error.
Muskingum went ahead 3-1 in the fourth inning, but W&J forced a 3-3 tie with single runs in the fourth and fifth frames. Sophomore catcher Susan Lessman (Dalton, Ohio/Dalton) singled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, while junior shortstop Kelsey Cunningham (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) singled and scored on Watson's double in the fifth.
Apryl Patterson provided the go-ahead run with a one-out solo homer in the sixth and the Muskies added another run for insurance. Morgan Yackey picked up the complete game win in the circle after allowing one earned run on eight hits. She collected her lone strikeout of the game on the final out.
Watson, Cunningham and Lessman all had two-hit games in the nightcap. Sophomore Bethany Shepherd (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) suffered the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits in three innings of relief.
W&J now sets its focus on the Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament which begins Thursday at Westminster. The third-seeded Presidents will face the second-seeded Geneva Golden Tornadoes at 1:00 pm.
