No. 10 W&J Outlasts No. 9 Occidental In California
WHITTIER, Calif. -- Junior Mike Magdic (Franklin Park, Pa./North Allegheny) scored three of his four goals during the third quarter to help 10th-ranked Washington & Jefferson record a 13-11 come-from-behind victory over ninth-ranked Occidental (Calif.) Sunday in the Presidents' final match of the Gary Troyer Tournament.
The Presidents (9-10) posted a 2-4 record during their west coast trip against some of the top-ranked teams in NCAA Division III.
W&J took control of the match by outscoring the Tigers (1-14) 7-2 during the third quarter to overcome a 7-4 halftime deficit. Magdic netted a pair of goals during the final two minutes of the quarter to give W&J a two-goal edge heading into the final eight minutes. Junior goalie Chris DeNunzio (Greenwich, Conn./Canterbury) made the lead hold up from that point, finishing the match with 10 saves.
Junior Carl Krause (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) added a pair of goals, while freshman Nick Willison (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) finished with three after scoring in each of the first three periods. Sophomore Kevin Dunigan (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) and freshman Emmet Pierson (Malibu, Calif./Malibu) both fired in one goal.
W&J returns to western Pennsylvania and will take on Gannon and Notre Dame (Ohio) Saturday at Penn State-Behrend.
